Yesterday marked the fourth Theory W course held at Pakalane in Hout Bay. As promised, the full video of Dr Jill Bolte Taylor and her astounding story of the stroke she suffered in her left brain. One of the most interesting aspects of her report was that as a brain scientist she was intensely curious about what was happening to her, and tried to recall and document the entire experience. Because her left brain almost completely shut down she was in the position to experience herself and the world from an almost purely right brain perspective.

Clarity of Mind September 9, 2008

It is well known that thinking is sharper when hungry.

The experience of mental clearness during a fast is much like an early morning drive in the country.  The sun is shinning; rolling hills are covered in brilliant light, then you drive down into a valley.  The car hits a fog patch, the surrounding landscape disappears and you are barely able to see the road ahead.  The up and down sensations of clear and foggy mindedness are opposite mental states that are able to trade off numerous times within a single day.  I have even found my eyesight to correspond with brain function: my mind and vision fuzzy, then the blood clears and I am left with crystal clear sight and sharp mindedness.  It is obvious what is going on.  Toxins in the blood are interfering with fasting’s ability to enhance brain processes.  As the fast progresses and the body detoxifies, fog patches diminish, leaving days of bright awareness.  Unfortunately, most of the fog is at the start of the fasting journey.  It takes some perseverance to experience the joyous clarity that can come during the fasting state.

Never overeat just before an exam or you may find a heavy head on the desk fast asleep.  University of Chicago students fasted for seven days, mental alertness increased and their progress in schoolwork was cited as remarkable.  The universal testimony of fasters is that thinking and focus is enhanced.

While fasting, thinking does slow down.  Surprisingly, this serves to enhance deeper thought; as if taking the foot off the accelerator allows the little details to come into focus, like neglected inner issues deserving important attention.  In an information-overloaded world a calmed mind can take time to seek out deeper understanding instead of darting here and there accumulating years of half-truths and shallow understanding.  You might even start thinking for yourself.

The Field of Wholeness August 26, 2008

I believe that there exists a field – and it is a field of wholeness - I call it the field of wholeness – and it is when we are in this field that we realise that ‘all is one’ – that everything has meaning and and that wholeness is possible for us both individually and collectively.

The road to this field is consciousness – consciousness is afterall, the road home.

Access to the field is surrender – the most counterintuitive yet courageous act anyone can make.

Silence is the language of the field.

Interdependency is the nature of the relationships within the field.

Energy is the fruit of the field.

Within the field we find the Source - a wellpoint from which all can drink in their own way.

At the Source transformation happens. As a process, it cannot be made.

In the field, holding paradoxes is possible.

In the field we begin to know the sanctity of all things, especially people.

In the field we begin to understand the balance between individuality and community.

In the field we  begin to know compassion, joy, wonder, creativity and love.

It is a life’s task to find the field – and having found it - to seek in all humility to extend it over all the world.
